LADY MALCOLM’S SERVANT’S BALL

A Duckie heritage project consisting of workshops, talks, an archive display, two huge parties and a print publication. The event was based around a series of nearly forgotten fancy dress parties that took place in the UK between the 1st and 2nd World Wars. The balls were masterminded by Lady Malcolm for her servants to enjoy the experience of a big dress up night out. They became an infamous hangout for queer folk to drag up and act up.

They Them designed publicity collateral for the events, updating historical elements with an irreverent spin. We worked closely with researcher EJ Scott to design an exhibition of the ephemera from the original balls and we produced a broadsheet newspaper that housed specially commissioned articles from academics and experts in the field.
